چکیده

We study the problem of designing envy-free sponsored search auctions, where bidders are budgetconstrained. Our primary goal is to design auctions that maximize social welfare and revenue — two classical objectives in auction theory. For this purpose, we characterize envy-freeness with budgets by proving several elementary properties including consistency, monotonicity and transitivity. Based on this characterization, we come up with an envyfree auction, that is both social-optimal and bidderoptimal for a wide class of bidder types. More generally, for all bidder types, we provide two polynomial time approximation schemes (PTASs) for maximizing social welfare or revenue, where the notion of envy-freeness has been relaxed slightly. Finally, in cases where randomization is allowed in designing auctions, we devise similar PTASs for social welfare or revenue maximization problems.

Position Auctions with Bidder-Specific Minimum Prices

Position auctions such as the Generalized Second Price (GSP) are commonly used for sponsored search, e.g., by Yahoo! and Google. We now have an understanding of the equilibria of these auctions, via game-theoretic concepts like Generalized English Auctions and the “locally envy-free” property, as well as through a relationship to the well-known, truthful Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism. I...

Multi-unit Auctions with Budget Constraints

Motivated by sponsored search auctions, we study multi-unit auctions with budget constraints. In the mechanism we propose, Sort-Cut, understating budgets or values is weakly dominated. Since Sort-Cut’s revenue is increasing in budgets and values, all kinds of equilibrium deviations from true valuations turn out to be bene…cial to the auctioneer. We show that the revenue of Sort-Cut can be an or...

Impact of ROI on Bidding and Revenue in Sponsored Search Advertisement Auctions

In this paper, we discuss how advertisers, by considering minimum return on investment (ROI), change their bidding and, consequently the auctioneer’s revenue in sponsored search advertisement auctions. We analyze the VickreyClarke-Groves (VCG), Generalized Second Price (GSP) and Generalized First Price (GFP) auction mechanisms in that respect. Analytical results are presented for the dominant s...

Keyword Auctions with Budget-constrained Bidders

We study a keyword auction model where bidders have constrained budgets. In the absence of budget constraints, Edelman, Ostrovsky, and Schwarz (2007) and Varian (2007) analyze “locally envy-free equilibrium” or “symmetric Nash equilibrium” bidding strategies in generalized second-price (GSP) auctions. However, bidders often have to set their daily budgets when they participate in an auction; on...
